’08 International Cooperation in the Field of Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage is making positive efforts toward international cooperation in the investigation and research of intangible cultural heritage with several institutions, especially in the Asian countries, in accordance with the globally increasing momentum of recent years in this field.

The Department also cooperates actively with international activities on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage conducted by the Asia/Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO (ACCU). In 2008, the Department sent a lecturer to the “Training Course for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage” which is held jointly with ACCU.

08international01Exchange Between Japan and Korea on Research Concerning the Conservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Based on the mutual agreement on exchange between Japan and Korea on research concerning the conservation of intangible cultural heritage with the Folkloric Studies Division of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, Korea, two researchers of the Department conducted practical studies for two weeks in Korea. In the fiscal year 2008, investigation was conducted on the situation of archiving of visual documents on intangible cultural properties in Korea.

08international02Research on Traditional Mask-making Ateliers in Thailand

As a part of the exchange program between Thailand and Japan, we visited ateliers for making traditional masks in Thailand. The masks are used in a mask dance, one of the intangible cultural heritage of Thailand. We did research on transmission of its craft technique.

08international03Meeting on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Asia

The 2nd meeting on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in Asia was held on 19th February, 2009. As a guest, the Director of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Division of the Cultural Heritage Administration, Korea gave an introduction to measures for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in Korea. Lively questions and answers were exchanged with persons concerned.
