From the Collections
Kabuki Sinpo (1879.2-1897.3)
A pioneer theatrical magazine, first issued in February, 1879. It carries information on performances and synopsis of theaters in Tokyo, reviews, news on actors, and obituaries in this field. The most significant article, among others, is the printed text of the scripts, which had never been permitted to be printed outside during the Edo period. The total number of issues accounted to 1669 until it was discontinued in March, 1897. This is a precious material because, if traced the obituaries and news columns, an almost daily record of the course of Kabuki in Tokyo during the Meiji period is available.

JAPAN, Shogun editon (12 vols.)
"Japan" was published in Boston in 1897. It is an introduction to the genre, culture, society, and history of Japan and was edited by Francis Brinkley (b.1841-d.1912 Tokyo), an Englishman and Japanophile who originally came to Japan in 1867 as gunnery instructor and later went into English education and journalism. Okakura Tenshin, who was the principal of Tokyo Art School (the present Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music), also contributed to this book. The Shogun edition is a limited deluxe version of which 25 copies were published. Many photographs and pictures by Japanese artists were inserted in the special edition. This book shows how interested the Europeans and Americans were in Japan in those days and serves as an invaluable key to the image they had of Japan.

Archaeometry
"Archaeometry" is a bulletin published twice a year for the scientific study in archaeology, such as dating, provenance, prospection, etc. This bulletin is published by the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art in Oxford University. But it is authorized as the most important international publication in the field because they accept its article from all countries. This is the first issue published in the spring of 1958.

Studies in Conservation
"Studies in Conservation" IIC (the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works), incorporated on April 27,1950 as the first international society, plays an important role in conservation not only for the sake of research activity but also for international cooperation. "Studies in Conservation", the quarterly journal published by IIC, has been regarded as the only one important international publication for conservation. This is the very first issue published in October 1952.
